Population distribution
In 2016, there were around 155,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15–24. 52% (81,117) were aged 15–19 and 48% (74,062) were aged 20–24 (Figure AY 1a).
Among young Indigenous Australians, 91% identified as being of Aboriginal origin only, 5% as Torres Strait Islander and 4% as both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.
Geographic distribution
Most Indigenous Australians aged 15–24 (60% or 92,901) lived outside Major cities.
In 2016, the state or territory with the most Indigenous Australian residents aged 15–24 was New South Wales (34% or 52,077), followed by Queensland (28% or 43,521) and Western Australia (12% or 18,963) (Figure AY 1b).
Women who gave birth
In 2020, 4,235 Indigenous women aged 20–24 gave birth (29% of all Indigenous women who gave birth), as did a further 1,608 Indigenous women aged under 20 (11%) (Figure AY 2).
