Population distribution
In 2016, there were around 255,455 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 1–14 in Australia—32% of the total Indigenous population (Figure CH 1a).
Among Indigenous children, 91% were of Aboriginal origin only, 4% were of Torres Strait Islander origin only and 5% were of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin (ABS 2016).
Geographic distribution
In 2016 among Indigenous children aged 1–14:
- 34% (86,018) lived in New South Wales and 29% (74,115) in Queensland.
- 37% (93,954) lived in Major cities (Figure CH 1b).
These proportions were similar for Indigenous children aged 1–4 and 5–14.
