Age of mothers
In 2020, among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who gave birth (14,384 women):
- 11% (1,608) were aged under 20.
- 29% (4,235) were aged 20–24.
- A higher proportion were aged under 30 (70%), compared with non-Indigenous women (36%) (Figure MB 1a).
Among Indigenous women who gave birth between 2010 and 2020:
- The proportion aged under 20 decreased from 20% to 11%.
- The proportion aged 25–29 increased from 24% to 30%.
- The proportion aged 35–39 and 40 and over remained relatively unchanged (Figure MB 1b).
