Population distribution
In 2016, there were 124,012 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 and over, corresponding to 1.5% of the total Australian population aged 50 and over.
Among those aged 50 and over who identified as Indigenous, 91% (113,251) identified as being of Aboriginal origin only, 6% (7,117) identified as being of Torres Strait Islander origin and 3% (3,644) identified as being of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin (ABS 2018).
Geographic distribution
In 2016, the majority of Indigenous Australians aged 50 and over lived in Major cities (35% or 43,062). 35% (43,686) lived in New South Wales, 26% (32,441) in Queensland and 12% (14,909) in Western Australia (Figure OP 1b).
