Cultural identification

In 2018–19, 66% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 18 and over identified with one or more of the following groups:

  • tribal group
  • language group
  • clan
  • mission
  • Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander regional group (regional Indigenous group).

The most common type of cultural identification was with a regional Indigenous group (35% or 167,700 of those aged 18 and over) (Figure CL 1).

In 2018–19:

  • 74% (357,500) of Indigenous Australians aged 18 and over recognised a homeland or traditional country.
  • 91% of Indigenous Australians aged 18 and over living in the Northern Territory recognised a homeland or traditional country (Figure CL 2).
  • 91% (83,700) of Indigenous Australians aged 18 and over in remote areas and 71% (273,600) in non-remote areas recognised a homeland or traditional country (Figure CL 2).
  • Of Indigenous Australians aged 18 and over who recognised a homeland or traditional country, 37% (130,500) lived in their homelands or traditional country (ABS 2019).
