Understanding an Australian Indigenous language

In 2014–15 among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people:

  • 17% (109,400) understood an Australian Indigenous language and 32% (200,200) understood only some Indigenous words.
  • 93% (101,500) of those who understood an Australian Indigenous language also spoke one.
  • 12% (22,400) of Indigenous children aged 3–14 understood an Australian Indigenous language and 29% (55,400) understood only some words (Figure CL 13).
