Prevalence by geography
In 2018–19, across remoteness areas the prevalence of disability among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples ranged between 36% (58,500 people) in Outer regional areas and 40% (78,400 people) in Inner regional areas.
The prevalence of profound/severe core activity limitations decreased with increasing remoteness from 10% (29,400 people) in Major cities to 5% (5,100 people) in Very remote areas (Figure DB 3).
In 2018–19:
- The jurisdiction with the highest rate of disability among Indigenous Australians was Tasmania (47% or 14,100 people), and the jurisdiction with the lowest rate was Western Australia (35% or 34,400 people).
- The jurisdiction with the highest rate of profound/severe core activity limitation among Indigenous Australians was Tasmania (13% or 3,900 people) and the jurisdiction with the lowest rate was the Northern Territory (6% or 4,500 people) (Figure DB 4).
