Literacy and numeracy
School students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in Australia’s National Assessment Program—Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests.
Based on the 2021 NAPLAN tests:
- In reading, 84% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Year 3 were at or above the national minimum standard, as were 78% of those in Year 5, 75% in Year 7, and 66% of those in Year 9 (Figure EW 7a).
- In numeracy, 81% of Indigenous students in Year 3 were at or above the national minimum standard, as were 76% of those in Year 5, 71% in Year 7, and 79% of those in Year 9 (Figure EW 7b).
