Diabetes and high blood sugar
Diabetes is a chronic condition marked by high levels of glucose in the blood. There are several types of diabetes, with the most common form being Type 2 diabetes. Complications of diabetes include heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and limb amputation (AIHW 2015).
In 2018–19, 8% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples reported they had diabetes or high blood sugar (66,600 people). The prevalence rates of diabetes increased with age, reaching 36% among those aged 55 and over (Figure HC 17).
