Self-assessed health
Self-assessed health status provides an overall measure of a population’s health based on how healthy people think they are.
The proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who reported excellent or very good health increased from 39% (160,300 people) in 2012–13 to 45% (238,600 people) in 2018–19.
In 2001, a lower proportion of Indigenous Australians in remote areas (35%) reported excellent or very good health than in non-remote areas (42%). In 2018–19, 45% of Indigenous Australians reported excellent or very good health in both remote and non-remote areas.
Based on age-standardised rates, Indigenous Australians were:
- Less likely than non-Indigenous Australians to report excellent health (14% and 22%, respectively).
- more likely than non-Indigenous Australians to report poor health (11% and 3%, respectively) (Figure HC 3).
