Health risk factors

High blood pressure

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for chronic diseases including stroke, coronary heart disease, heart failure and chronic kidney disease. It can be controlled with lifestyle measures and medication to reduce the risk of these chronic diseases (AIHW 2019b).

In 2018–19, among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged 18 and over:

  • 23% (112,100) had high blood pressure.
  • The proportion of people with high blood pressure increased with age from 9% (9,200) for those aged 18–24, to 37% (35,900) for those aged 55 and over.
  • Males were somewhat more likely to have high blood pressure (25% or 58,800) than females (21% or 53,200) (Figure HR 14).
