Physical activity

Regular physical activity and a healthy diet are important factors in maintaining a healthy weight. Exercise is also an important factor in preventing and managing chronic illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (AIHW 2020c).

In 2014–15, among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 4–14 in the last week:

  • 76% (131,218) were physically active for at least 60 minutes every day.
  • 3% (4,987) were not physically active for at least 60 minutes on any day (Figure HR 9).

In 2018–19, among Indigenous Australians aged 15 and over in non-remote areas:

  • 11% (47,900) met the physical activity guidelines, by being physically active on most or all days, with at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per week.
  • Males (13% or 26,300) were more likely to meet the physical activity guidelines than females (10% or 21,700) (Figure HR 10).
