Housing circumstances and health

Housing tenure

In 2018–19, among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults living in private dwellings:

  • 31% (151,560) lived in households that were owned or being purchased by a household member (referred to as home owners).
  • 34% (163,298) rented through social housing (i.e., state or territory housing authority or community housing).
  • 33% (159,068) rented privately through a real estate agent or other arrangement (AIHW & NIAA 2021) (Figure HH 1a).

In 2016, among households with at least one Indigenous resident, housing costs were generally much lower in remote areas compared with non-remote areas, especially for renters (Figure HH 1b).
