Housing tenure
In 2018–19, among Indigenous adults living in private dwellings:
- 31% (151,560) lived in households that were owned or being purchased by a household member (referred to as home owners).
- 34% (163,298) rented through social housing (i.e., state or territory housing authority or community housing).
- 33% (159,068) rented privately through a real estate agent or other arrangement (AIHW 2021) (Figure HH 1a).
In 2016, among households with at least one Indigenous resident, housing costs were generally much lower in remote areas compared with non-remote areas, especially for renters (Figure HH 1b).
