Health

Many factors contribute to the health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This section outlines overall health measures and main causes of ill health for Indigenous Australians aged 25–49.

Self-assessed health

In 2018–19, among Indigenous Australians aged 25–49:

  • 44% (108,800) thought their health was excellent or very good.
  • 34% (83,300) thought their health was good.
  • 22% (53,100) thought their health was fair or poor.
  • Similar proportions of males (46% or 53,600) and females (44% or 55,900) thought their health was excellent or very good (Figure AD 9).

Health conditions

In 2018–19, 79% (194,500) of Indigenous Australians aged 25–49 had a current, long-term health condition: that is, conditions lasting or expected to last 6 months or more.

Overall, the most common current long-term health conditions were:

  • diseases of the eye and adnexa (43% or 105,500)
  • diseases of respiratory system (33% or 81,800)
  • mental and behavioural problems (31% or 77,000)
  • diseases of the musculoskeletal system & connective tissue (30% or 72,400) (Figure AD 10).

Mental health conditions

In 2018–19, 31% (77,000) of Indigenous Australians aged 25–49 had a current long term mental health condition.

The most common type of currently diagnosed mental health conditions were anxiety disorder (23% or 57,400), depression (19% or 46,400) and behavioural, emotional or other mental problems (10% or 23,200) (Figure AD 11).

Disability

In 2018–19, among Indigenous Australians aged 25–49:

  • 42% (103,200) had some form of disability.
  • 16% (16,900) of those who had a disability had profound or severe core activity limitation (Figure AD 12a).
  • Similar proportions of people in remote (42% or 21,300) and non-remote (42% or 82,200) areas had some form of disability (Figure AD 12b).

Deaths

In 2014–2018, the annual death rate among Indigenous Australians aged 25–49 was 322 per 100,000 population (3,486 deaths). Indigenous males (406 per 100,000 population or 2,165 deaths) aged 25–49 had a higher annual death rate than females (240 per 100,000 population or 1,321 deaths).

The leading cause of death for Indigenous Australians aged 25–49 was coronary heart disease (an annual rate of 41 per 100,000 population or 439 deaths) closely followed by suicide (an annual rate of 40 per 100,000 population or 436 deaths) (Figure AD 13).
