Population distribution
In 2016, there were around 244,841 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 25–49 in Australia. 46% (113,812) were aged 25–34 and 54% (131,029) were aged 35–49.
92% (224,495) identified as being of Aboriginal origin only, 5% (11,994) as Torres Strait Islander and 3% (8,352) as both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ABS 2018).
Geographic distribution
Most Indigenous Australians aged 25–49 (63% or 153,144) lived outside Major cities.
Across states and territories, the population of Indigenous Australians aged 25–49 was highest in New South Wales (32% or 77,307) and Queensland (27% or 65,904) (Figure AD 1b).
