Birth–1 year

Age of mothers

In 2018, among Indigenous women who gave birth (13,754 women):

  • 12% (1,638) were aged under 20.
  • 32% (4,332) were aged 20–24.
  • A higher proportion were aged under 30 (72%), compared with non-Indigenous women (38%) (Figure MB 1a).

Among Indigenous women who gave birth between 2010 and 2018:

  • The proportion aged under 20 decreased from 20% to 12%.
  • The proportion aged 25–29 increased from 24% to 29%.
  • The proportion aged 35–39 and 40 and over remained relatively unchanged (Figure MB 1b).
