Education and work

Student enrolment

230,677 Indigenous students were enrolled in Australian schools in 2019 including:

  • 20,105 in Pre-Year 1
  • 115,817 in Years 1 to 6
  • 89,262 in Years 7 to 12
  • 5,493 in ungraded schooling (Figure EW 2; ABS 2020).

In 2019, among Indigenous students:

  • 84% (193,080 students) were enrolled in government schools.
  • 10% (24,101 students) were enrolled in Catholic schools.
  • 6% (13,496 students) were enrolled in independent schools (Figure EW 3).

In 2019, the number of Indigenous students enrolled by state and territory ranged between:

  • 45,725 (New South Wales) and 1,289 (Australian Capital Territory) in Years 1 to 6 (including pre-year 1, or foundation year).
  • 24,965 (New South Wales) and 708 (Australian Capital Territory) in Years 7 to 10.
  • 6,146 (Queensland) and 268 (Australian Capital Territory) in Year 11 to 12 (Figure EW 4).
