Difficulty finding employment
In 2014–15, of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged 15–64 who were unemployed (13% or 53,083), 92% (48,735) had difficulties finding work (AIHW & NIAA 2020). The most common reasons Indigenous Australians aged 15–64 had difficulty finding work were:
- no jobs in their local area or line of work (41% or 21,636)
- transport problems or distance (32% or 17,018)
- no driver’s licence (31% or 16,346)
- insufficient education, training or skills (30% or 15,963)
- no jobs at all (26% or 13,831) (Figure EW 19).
