Access to health services

The First Nations health care access dashboard below shows the proportion, or number, of First Nations people in a region who live within a certain travel time of different types of primary health care services or public acute hospitals. You can choose the region and service type as well as the travel time. Clicking on the map will give you the statistics for that region. If you click on a service location, the name of that service will be shown.

Communities and services map

The Communities and services map allows you to view the location of different types of health services in combination with locations from the Australian Government Indigenous Programs & Policy Locations (AGIL). The AGIL dataset contains the preferred and alternate names for locations where Australian Government programs and services have been, are being, or may be provided in the future. It is not a complete list of where First Nations people live, but showing the AGIL locations on the map makes it possible to see where many First Nations communities are located relative to the distribution of health services.

For reference, the map also shows the ASGS Indigenous Regions (IREG) and Remoteness Areas. The Indigenous population tick box allows you to see the proportion of the population who are First Nations in each IREG.

The map is based on data as at the year indicated, and does not reflect more recent changes. Additionally, GP and Indigenous Health Services locations are based on services registered on Health Direct, which may not include every service.

The services map has a number of interactive functions:

  • Move around the map – by using your cursor to click and drag the map

  • Zoom in and out – by clicking on the buttons at the bottom right-hand side of the map

  • Click on location(s) points – to find out more about the service displayed

  • Full screen mode – by clicking on the fullscreen button at the top right hand side, above the map.

The Indigenous population filter adds an Indigenous population layer by Indigenous Region (IREG).

Each region is coloured according to the size of the First Nations population in each IREG. The darker the colour of the region, the greater the size of the First Nations population as a proportion of the total population.

Once selected, a legend will pop out below the filter indicating the proportion ranges.

The locations of health services are from a range of different sources summarised below.
